Please read the following information before submitting your application:
The Houtan Scholarship Foundation (HSF) seeks students from all origins, Iranian and non-Iranian, who have high academic performance and have proven interest in promoting Iran’s great culture, heritage, language and civilization.

Currently, one award of $3500 per year will be given toward a graduate school education for the selected applicant. The award is offered for a combined fall and spring semester. The application is acceptable if it is received no later than the 1st of June preceding the award year.


  1. The applicant should have a working knowledge of Parsi and should demonstrate an active interest in Iranian culture, heritage, and literature.
  2. The applicant must presently be attending or anticipate attending an accredited graduate school.
  3. The applicant must have superior academic performance or a significant increase of academic performance over the course of his/her academic career.
  4. Financial need will be a factor in determining the scholarship recipients.

Selection of Recipients:

  1. The scholarship will be awarded to an eligible graduate student, regardless of the student’s field of study; the scholarship will be sent directly to the graduate school.
  2. After the board has reviewed the application and other submitted documents, the finalists will be notified by mail or email.
  3. Each finalist must complete an interview, either by phone or in person, with Mina Houtan, PhD, Founder and Chairperson of the Houtan Scholarship Foundation. This is the Foundation’s first step in establishing a relationship with the student.
  4. The recipient will be selected from the pool of finalists based on submitted documents, the interview, and finantial need; the recipient will be notified by mail or email.
  5. Once you are selected as a winner – you are expected to acknowledge the receipt of the notice and contact us by e-mail within a month of the date you receive the notice. Failure to do so will result in losing the award.

Re-application Criteria:

  1. If contact information remains the same within one(1) application year, there is no need to fill out the application form again.
  2. Submit all grades following the receipt of the scholarship.
  3. The applicant must show that he/she has continued an active interest in Iranian culture, heritage, and literature following the receipt of the scholarship. Interest must be proved with appropriate documentation.
  4. Applicants must apply by the deadline. Your re-application process will be reviewed in comparison with the new pool of applicants.

Family Status: Please attach parents' W-2 form if you are their dependent. If financially you are supporting yourself, send your W-2 form. For non-US applicants (those who did not study in the United States are considered non-US applicants), no financial forms are necessary. Please include the name, address, highest level of education, present occupation, where employed, and annual income of your Father/Mother/Guardian.

Please indicate which school you will attend and provide the address of that school.

Two letters of recommendation: one from your teacher, instructor, or professor, and the other from an employer, or both letters from two professors. You may send the letters of recommendations separately or with the rest of the documents. If your professor would like to send the recommendation directly, please have them send the recommendation to with the subject line as "YOUR NAME - letter of recommendation"

Write an essay, either in Parsi or English, about your goals relating to your education, career, and future plans. The essay must be 500-1000 words. Please submit the typed essay and upload it to the application form. If you choose to write the essay in Parsi, you may submit it in your own handwriting.

If you have any additional items that you would like to submit, please include LINKS to those items in the text area. This could include LINKS to videos, lecture series, books, articles or any other media.

Application Checklist:

1. Completed application, received by the 1st of June of the award year

2. Two letters of recommendation.

3. College transcript.

4. Goals and Aspirations essay.

5. Letter of Admission to Graduate School (if applicable).

6. If you have media that you would like to include, such as a made a film, written a book, written articles in magazines or newspapers, gave lectures or any other claim, it must be accompanied by a link in order to be accepted.

7. Do not translate documents written in Parsi.
